
As Europe grapples with an aging bridge stock — a growing share of it either significantly deteriorated or simply not being inspected regularly — researchers are turning to digital twin technology as a way to close that visibility gap.
A study recently published in the Journal of Infrastructure Intelligence and Resilience presents a digital twin framework for structural health monitoring that goes beyond the theoretical models seen in earlier research. The system combines physics-based finite element modelling, drone-based photogrammetry, and wireless sensor networks to build a live digital replica of a bridge, continuously updated with real-world data.
Unlike traditional inspection methods — periodic, visual, and inevitably subjective — the framework is designed to run in a closed loop: sensors feed real-time vibration and environmental data into the model, the model flags anomalies and structural changes, and asset managers gain an early, data-driven warning system rather than a snapshot taken once every few years.
What sets this research apart is that it was tested in the field rather than only in simulation. The framework was demonstrated and validated on an operational railway truss bridge, using live vibration and environmental data to calibrate the digital model against the real structure — a step many comparable studies have not yet reached. The researchers also point to the framework’s flexibility across bridge types, from concrete and steel to timber and more complex structures such as suspension bridges, suggesting a route to scaling the approach across diverse infrastructure portfolios.
For the repair, reinforcement and protection sector, the implications are direct. Better monitoring means earlier detection of deterioration, more targeted interventions, and — ultimately — a stronger case for planned maintenance over reactive repair. It is precisely the kind of shift from guesswork to data-driven asset management that will be at the centre of discussions at ACRP’s own European Conference 2026, “Saving Structures,” taking place in Stockholm on 25–26 November.
