Technical knowledge gets us far. But the decisions that determine whether a structure gets repaired, reinforced, or demolished are rarely made by engineers alone. They are shaped by economics, regulation, market maturity, procurement constraints, and the willingness of asset owners and public authorities to invest in longevity over replacement.
That is precisely why the European Conference 2026 closes not with another technical presentation, but with a roundtable — and why the people around the table have been chosen to represent perspectives that don’t always share the same stage.
The participants:
Carmen Andrade (CIMNE / fib / RILEM) brings the scientific perspective of someone who has devoted decades to understanding how concrete deteriorates and what can be done to extend its life — and who has led the field’s most important international bodies, including as President of RILEM and ALCONPAT International.
Patrik Andersson (Aquajet Systems AB / EWJI) represents the technology and equipment side: the tools and methods that make repair possible at scale, and how innovation in execution is changing what the sector can achieve.
Maurice van Sante (ING Bank) brings the economic lens — the one most often missing from technical conferences. As a senior economist specialising in the European construction and renovation market, he understands the financial and market forces that drive or delay investment in existing structures.
Mo Ehsani and Brian MacNeil (ICRI) contribute the practitioner and commercial perspective, with experience spanning research, manufacturing, contracting, and market development across two continents and more than 1,000 projects in 27 countries.
The discussion will be moderated by Peter McCloskey (Vector Corrosion Technologies), whose background across specialist contractors, concrete repair supervision, and cathodic protection manufacturing gives him the fluency to draw out the real tensions in the conversation.
This is the session where the barriers get named — and where, hopefully, some of the answers begin to take shape. It is open to all conference participants and is designed to be a genuine exchange, not a panel of prepared statements.
We look forward to a conversation that is as honest as it is necessary.
