What are the steps to follow when repairing the concrete of a marine structure?
When concrete elements are repaired, the goal is to restore their original state by repairing the damaged concrete, restoring the passivation of the reinforcement, and preventing pathogenic agents from entering through protective barriers.
For this, an investigation and further diagnosis (see chapter 4) must have been done before establishing a repair strategy to have assessed the condition of the structure and identify the causes of deterioration.
A large part of whether the repair succeeds or fails depends on how well it is designed, for which the right data is crucial.
Anyhow, the most appropriate options for the repair of the structure should be chosen based on the principles set out in the standard EN 1504-9. Having regard to this standard the steps in a repair are as listed below:
- Preparation of the existing concrete for repair
- Treatment of reinforcement and steel repair and protection
- Reconstruction of the concrete section – Crack injection
- Cathodic protection
Moreover, generally, after the repair, it may be necessary to apply concrete protection treatments to ensure de durability of the repair and the whole structure.
