Products and systems according to EN 1504

PRODUCTS_SYSTEMS

The content of this chapter has been elaborated based on the provisions settled in the EN 1504 standard, “Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures – Definitions, requirements, quality control and evaluation of conformity”.

In this regard, to comply with the wording and spirit of EN 1504, the word material should be replaced by products and systems in the context of concrete repair and strengthening.

The following definitions provided by the standard are crucial in the context of this guide:

  • Structural repair products and systems: Products and systems applied to a concrete structure, to replace defective concrete and to restore structural integrity and durability.
  • Non-structural repair products and systems: Products and systems which, when applied on a concrete surface, restore the geometric or aesthetic aspect of the structure.
  • Structural bonding products and systems: Products and systems applied to concrete to provide a durable structural bond to additional applied material.
  • Performance: The ability of a product or system to provide an effective and durable repair or protection without adverse effects on the original structure, other structures, site operatives, users, third parties and environment.
  • Performance requirements: Required mechanical, physical and chemical properties of products and systems to provide durability and stability of both the repaired concrete and the structure.
  • Products: Constituents formulated for the repair or protection of concrete structures.
  • Systems: Two or more products which are used together, or consecutively, to undertake repair or protection of concrete structures.
  • Technology: Application of a product or system using specific equipment or method (for example, crack injection).

According to the standard, the selection of appropriate products and systems for quality remediation requires a comprehensive assessment of several material properties, which can be divided into three main classifications:

Bearing capacity prerequisites, operational circumstances, environmental considerations, technological requirements, and aesthetic requirements are among these categories.

It is also important to consider the cohesion of materials with their underlying substrate, which usually requires modifications through the addition of appropriate additives or the application of adhesive bridges.

This section of the guide covers the categories of products and systems defined in the
standard EN 1504-1. All the categories are included in the table below.

Further, it must be noted that the products and systems listed at EN 1504-1 include the following chemical types and constituents. Their definitions can be consulted in the standard. The numbering used in the EN 1504 standard is indicated to facilitate their:

• Additions (3.3.1)
• Additives for hydraulic binders (3.3.2)
• Additives for reactive polymer (3.3.3)
• Admixtures (3.3.4)
• Coating (3.3.5)
• Hydraulic binders (H) (3.3.6)
• Hydraulic mortars and hydraulic concretes (CC) (3.3.7)
• Hydrophobic impregnation (3.3.8)
• Impregnation (3.3.9)
• Polymer hydraulic cement mortars or concretes (PCC) (3.3.10)
• Polymer mortars and polymer concretes (PC) (3.3.11)
• Reactive polymer (P) binder (3.3.12)
